Description

In January 2016, there was further influx into Maiduguri’s camps from areas affected by military operations, as well as more arrivals from Cameroon into Yola’s camps. These secondary displacements require immediate basic emergency shelter assistance. With CERF Rapid Response funding received this month, reinforced emergency shelter construction is underway in Maiduguri to cater for relocations from schools, and to upgrade and decongest the worst of Maiduguri’s camps before the rains. However, critical gaps remain, both in Maiduguri and outside, such as Kakureter informal camp in Damaturu where no shelter response has been delivered to date. Partners accessed Biu in south Borno from Gombe State in January, noting high shelter and NFI need there as well. Several camps exist in areas that are currently inaccessible, such as Dikwa, sheltering tens of thousands of people. Latest reports assert 52,000 people living at very high density in a military camp in Dikwa, underscoring the need for coherent humanitarian action.
