Need analysis

Around 3.2 million people are in need of Shelter and NFI assistance in Somalia. According to PRMN report and partner assessments, conflict and drought has displaced over 112,000 people in the first quarter of 2021. Most of the displaced have arrived in Gedo, Lower Shabelle, Bay, Galgaduud and Banadir regions. Around 5,000 households have been displaced from several villages in Wanla Weyne district in Lower Shabelle due to threats from Alshabaab. The IDPs have since fled to four main locations; Wanla Weyn, Afgooye, Afgooye corridor and Mogadishu. Emergency shelter and NFI have been identified as the most urgent need of the displaced.

Response

  • During the first quarter of 2021, the Shelter Cluster partners have reached 90,923 individuals (4%) of 2.3 Million targeted with NFI assistance, and 93,816 individuals (4%) of the 2.4 million targeted with shelter assistance.

Gaps / challenges

  • There is very limited NFI stocks and no shelter stocks available with Shelter Cluster partners in Somalia. Prepositioning of shelter and NFI kits is very critical for effective shelter and NFI response.
  • Shelter Cluster has been underfunded affecting humanitarian shelter response in timely and effective manner.
  • Humanitarian access has been identified as one of the hurdles in providing assistance in some locations like Bardale town.
